It’s a new year and we at Tobiko are excited for what lies ahead. There has already been some major news in the data world, and we’re proud to add to it with an announcement of our own: Tobiko has acquired Quary!
This acquisition is an important step forward for Tobiko and what we can build for our products and community, particularly open-source. Users of Tobiko’s tools can already begin enjoying benefits of our partnership with Quary, from significantly faster compile times thanks to Quary’s use of Rust in its frameworks, to improvements to our async task queuing software.
Why Tobiko + Quary Changes the Game
We designed Tobiko’s solution with the goal of enabling faster, error-free, data transformation with much less waste than other tools in the space. From day one, we’ve had a deep semantic understanding of SQL and the ability to capture current and historical states of data giving us unparalleled precision and reliability in transformation. Our column-level lineage puts industry-leading control and insight into the hands of our users - including our open-source project, SQLMesh - into how data flows across tables and transformations. And our virtual data environments allow changes in development with zero waste in processing resources.
Now, joining forces with Quary takes our vision even further. By integrating their Rust-powered capabilities and expertise in building transparent, accessible data workflows, we’re poised to significantly enhance developer experience and development velocity. Together, we can provide faster, more intuitive, and more impactful tools for data engineers and teams.
What Quary Brings to the Table
Founded by Ben King, Quary was designed to solve the friction he experienced while scaling the data function at Tumelo. Breaking through information silos and delivering actionable insights to stakeholders required a new approach. Quary’s solution (dubbed “BI for engineers”) focused on making data workflows faster, clearer, and more accessible.
Quary’s standout features include:
- Browser-based and Built in Rust: Exceptional speed and performance, particularly for compile times. And because projects could run in users’ browsers without relying on servers, user experiences felt instantaneous
- Democratizing Data Access: Quary empowered engineers to build dashboards, reporting, and apps using just code, giving teams greater agency over their data.
- A Novel Approach to Virtual Layers: While Tobiko’s virtual data environments are stateful and reflect our semantic understanding, Quary tackled this from a different angle, with a transparent virtual layer that does away with users’ need to push code and allows them to iterate on charts without making database changes.
This focus on speed, accessibility, and transparency made Quary an invaluable addition to the Tobiko ecosystem.
A Shared Vision to Shape the Future of MDS - and Deliver Results Today
We’re thrilled to welcome the Quary team to Tobiko. Their expertise is already making an impact: for instance, Ben has optimized the parsing speed of SQLGlot, our open-source SQL parser and transpiler, by 35% in just the past month. These early results are a testament to the power of this collaboration.
Looking ahead, we’re excited to integrate the innovations that made Quary world-class—Rust’s speed, workflow transparency and accessibility, and their unique take on simplifying virtual layers—to drive meaningful advancements in Tobiko’s product suite. And you don’t have to wait to see the improvements: some of these are already live in our tools today.
Stay tuned for more updates on how we’re maintaining our commitment to open source and pushing the boundaries of what’s possible in data transformation.
